Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

Happy Monday citizens of the writing world!
In medieval England and during colonial times, there were town criers who stood in the middle of town ringing a large bell crying, "Hear ye, hear ye!" This meant important news is coming. As self-published authors, we need to be our own town criers. We do indeed have important news to share, but how do we go about that in modern times?
The Phases of Self-Promotion
When you've self-published a book, you are responsible for marketing. For people who are introverts, this can seem terrifying! I can relate. Not being the most outgoing person, I must push myself at times. My saving grace: when I'm passionate about something, I become an extrovert, gently pushing my introverted self aside. Here are some ways we can get the news out about our books.
Word of Mouth
You are holding your own book! This is HUGE! Tell everyone—the cashier at the grocery store, your hair stylist and all the stylists in the salon, your dentist and their office staff. . . tell them all! Let your excitement be contagious to everyone you encounter. And, be prepared. Carry your business card and even a bookmark for your book with a QR Code on it to make ordering easy. This is the FUN part!
Look for Book Signing Events
Book signings are an excellent way to tell the world about your book. Look for these events in your local town. Check with your library to see if they hold an annual Local Authors Book Signing. Put in your application early. Spaces fill up fast. And, once you're in, find that outgoing side of your personality and talk to everyone who comes your way.
Selling Books on Consignment
When you've self-published a book, your book might be placed everywhere, online only. One of the difficulties of self-publishing is that you will not see your book on the shelves in bookstores. That is, unless you make that happen. How? You can offer your book to stores on consignment. You'll need a One-Sheet, which is basically a book resume, and a copy of your book. Look for indie book stores, or children's boutiques who also carry books. Then, call on those stores. With some luck, your book will be sitting on a shelf in that store.
Social Media is Your Friend
Another great way to get the word out is through social media postings. Some people may not be quite comfortable with this part. But I will say, social media has been kind to me throughout my book promotion. You only need to pick one platform. I've found Instagram to be excellent for this. Talking about your book, especially when it's in the process of being worked on and completed will get people excited for its launch date. And, when your book is finally published, your post will be awesome!
Talk To Other Writers
Meeting other writers at book selling events gives you the opportunity to ask about how they promote their books. You'd be amazed at the wonderful tips you'll receive, especially if they have a lot of experience. Be prepared to take notes! I've gotten many tips on where to go for author book readings. All of this will help us get the word out about our wonderful books.
Be passionate and be brave, dear writer friends. Some of us have waited a long time for this moment. Let yourself and your books shine! The world needs both of you.
See you next week!
