Paving the Path To Children's Publishing

Welcome to my website, and welcome to my blog! I'm so excited to be here.
Today is a special day for me. My picture book, Make Me LAUGH, Nonna! was just posted on Amazon. Wow! This is when it all becomes real. It's an amazing feeling, but if you're wondering how I got here and perhaps how you could be here, too, this is the place for you.
The Beginning
"I think I'd like to write a book." Sound familiar? I've talked to many people who have had this thought. So, once those words playfully run through your mind, where do you start? I'd love to invite you to share my path, which I hope will help you.
My Beginning
The writing bug bit me right after the birth of our first child, Melissa. I've always loved books, so I made a trip to the closest bookstore, and bought an armful of children's books to read to our daughter. Yes, I know, she was only just the teeniest person who didn't understand a word I said, but I read to her anyway. After reading book after book, I started to get the urge to write a book myself. But was children's literature the perfect genre for me? To find out for sure, I enrolled in a creative writing class.
That decision was the best decision. In this class, we had to write poetry, a short story, a personal essay, and a story for children. I tried my best with all the other types of writing until I got to children's literature. That piece I wrote came out effortlessly. So, I left the class saying to myself "Ah-ha! That's what I need to write!"
Practice, Practice, Practice!
The only way to perfect your craft is to write... a lot. And, if you want to write for children, surround yourself with children. I got wonderful ideas just by sitting in a park with our daughter, watching other children play. To write for children, it works best if you can enter their world. Thinking like a child will help you write for them.
Is There More?
Good question. 😊 Oh yes, There is a lot more. We've just touched the surface. But it's a good start. Once you start writing, you'll realize that you might feel a little lonely. Sure, you can read what you've written to your family and even to your dog or cat, but something is missing. Come back next week to find out how to fix that problem.
Thanks for reading!
